The movie opens showing a group of young kids playing the game but losing. I must also mention the scene in which one of the boys explodes because he unwisely decided to try to end the game by walking outside of the house. Leave it there though unless you fancy playing a of the legend instead. These are the best moments of the film but the sudden shifts in tone can be a bit disconcerting. Well, for one thing, it has The Midnight Man! One night, upon the request of her not-always-there relative, Alex rummages through attic trunks for a silver-backed hand mirror. What does 2018 have in store for us? Anna Lin Shaye seems to be suffering from some form of mental illness as she alternates between being sharp then sweet to her granddaughter, Alex Gabrielle Haugh. Better bring in Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee to save the planet! Her genre vet status on display like a damn clinic here.
It all seems like harmless fun—until they unleash the terrifying spirit of The Midnight Man, an unholy force who pits them against their darkest demons and dares them to survive. Robert Englund knows a thing or two about nightmares. This fun flashback ends with a surviving little girl closing the door of the house, as creepy as humanly possible. He played the good doctor of the family, who tries to help the kids, but gets killed because he lets his emotions get the best of him at one point. He can form out of clouds and is a stickler for rules candles lit at all times, 10 seconds to re-ignite, if you fail he exploits your deepest fear. Kids are playing a game inside the circle of salt, and, mmm, pudding hits the fan when one of them gets scared, goes mental and leaves the circle.
Visually, we like what we see. Back from college to take care of her ailing Aunt Anna Lin Shaye , Alex Gabrielle Haugh and her best friend and beta-male Miles Grayson Gabriel decide to play a game they find in the attic which involves an incantation, the drawing of blood, and a lit candle to summon a monster called the Midnight Man. First of all, you are never sure with Lin Shaye. She always looks like there are dark layers underneath that charming exterior. Tell us in the comments! Lead Gabrielle Haugh has a kind of deadpan delivery that I grew kind of weary of. When you see two genre icons like Lin Shaye and Robert Englund attached to a project, you had damn well give it the attention it deserves and with that thought in mind — we just got word on a new flick titled The Midnight Man that will be making it our way right after the first of the year.
The Midnight Man is worth watching for the opening 10 minutes purely to see a kid explode in a shower of blood. A game suggests that some form of fun is had. I understand that the Midnight Man is known to play unfairly and maybe calling it a game is cheating itself, but this is most definitely not a game. Yes, this movie is no Oscar material or made to be someday called cvlt, but The Midnight Man is a pro made movie and imo for the aficionado of horror a good snack in-between. Lin Shaye injects so much destabilized madness into this energetic, midnight-perfect role, elevating herself into a stratosphere well above The Midnight Man itself. You know, the only rational decision. For the most part, 2017 was a pretty good year for horror. The film then jumps to modern times where one of the surviving kids, now elderly, is being looked after by her grand-daughter.
Instead she finds a nondescript wrapped box with what appears to be a game inside. Well, some dark souls could rightfully argue that a cruel death is still a kind of good reward, because, you know, who wants to die a common, total boring death!? A girl and her friends find a game in the attic that summons a creature that uses their worst fears against them. The performances are swell too. After our hopes skyrocket, mechanical plot devices are pinned to a storyboard with the utmost lack of exploration. Play at your own risk. The final twists in the film actually work and end this film on a note that is a bit darker than most teen jump-scare fests. Maybe a roll of the dice.

The Midnight Man imho does not belong in either category, it is a small horror movie with a story-line based on a game that evokes a dark, evil entity and the price of the game is one's life and if one loses the game you get a fine cruel death. One young player gets decapitated, another explodes into a red splattery mess against fresh snowfall , but then a vacuous lull in process takes hold. The villain of the piece is every spooky horror figure ever and the fodder are characterless clichés. Midnight Man into their house — because, as horror movies have proven, tempting occult fates is buckets of fun! The film is well shot for being a low budget indie horror and when it wants to be, it can be really gory. So, what else is there to do but play the game? So, in short, for sure there is nothing new in the western front, but what we get are decent actors Lin Shaye, Robert Englund, also the young actors do not disappoint and a good production value with some nice value of gore and splatter and a good, dark atmosphere and a very bad guy. Can someone calculate a handicap for them, please? At first, Alex and her friends think the game is harmless fun.
